Justice League Elite #4
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Joe Kelley
Pencils: Doug Mahnke
Inks: Tom Nguyen
Something happened between this issue and the last. I was thinking that this title was OK, but nothing spectacular. This issue, though, was, while not the greatest story ever told (we all know that is Dark City) but the art sent it right over the top. The JLE botched their first mission and someone got killed and they believe the killer is one of them. There is a struggle amongst the team as they try to figure out who it may be and things finally come to a head where the JLA steps in. While the JLA does not completely agree with the covert ops methods of the JLE, as long as they do not cross the line, the JLA can stomach their continual operation, especially when one of their members, the Flash, is along to “baby-sit”, couple that with the moral compass that is Oliver Queen, the Green Arrow, and you have the clichéd powder keg. The outcome leads one of the members to walk away and a mysterious person in the shadows. This is a typical comic book story, with atypical art by the team of Mahnke and Nguyen. This has got to be one of the most beautiful books I have probably seen. I don’t think this team gets the credit the richly deserve. While some of the images can be typically comic book stuff, the majority of the book is wonderfully illustrated. The art is gorgeous. Did I mention I liked the artwork? You may not like the premise or story of the book, but the art more than makes up for it.

JSA #66
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Geoff Johns
Pencils: Don Kramer
Inks: Keith Champagne
I promise this will be the last time, at least for a little while, that I carry on about the greatness that is the JSA. This is the second part of the Hourman (or should I say Hourmen) centric story line Out of Time. I talked about the first part last month so I’ll try to sum it up briefly. Rex was supposed to die at the hands of the villain Extant, Rick his son took his place so that he could go on living, and the android is there to help keep the time stream from collapsing upon itself due to the switch. Three hourmen, and a good story with equally good art. The thing that has always surprised me about this title, and I apologize if I am repeating myself, is the way Johns always finds a way to honor the heritage of what has come before and add to it enough new information that it actually adds to the richness of the history and future of the JSA. I remember over 5 years ago picking up the one shot specials that were out right before this series kicked off and then deciding to give this title a try having never read any of their adventures. This book has constantly been one of my favorite reads, which is quite a feat in this day and age. Johns never seems to be padding stories so that they can go to trade. Nothing ever seems forced and even with the rich history it is generally quite reader friendly. I recommend you pick up a trade or two and introduce yourself to something that is truly a treat.
