Dead@17: Revolution #1
Publisher: Viper
Comics
Writer and Art:
Josh Howard
I had read a few reviews of the first Deat@17 series and thought it
may be a good idea to go and check it out for myself. This is the
story of Nara Kilday who was murdered and came back as one of the
“Resurrected”, apparently marked when born to return once
they have died. Once they are resurrected they are given “heavenly
powers” to fight evil; and the evil they are trying to hunt
down is Lord Bolabogg. Nara and her mentor, Noel Raddemer, are traveling
the country to find Nara’s friend Violet who may be carrying,
via pregnancy, Bolobogg’s new form. Summarized from the inside
cover, this was quite helpful in figuring out just what was going
on, since this series seems to pick right up from where the last series
ended (I assume). This series opens up with the assassination attempt
of Senator Vic Alcasan, candidate for the presidency of the United
States. The assassin, a member of Heaven’s Militia, Joan, comes
to the aid of Nara and Noel, as they are about to be overcome by a
group of “feeders”. While explaining why she has rescued
them, Joan also tells them something that totally contradicts what
they have been doing for the past few months. They may not be looking
in the right direction. I have one basic, critique for this issue,
the art. While I don’t normally like this type of art, with
the wide eyes and pseudo-anime style drawings, but that didn’t
bother me, it was the layout of the panels. The panels are large and
they flow nicely but in many places there just aren’t a lot
of them on the page, so that makes this one very quick read. I guess
this could be a sort of compliment then, I wanted more; this book
went by to fast. I felt that there could have been more “story”
in the pages, but since I did not read the first series, I think I
am just behind. This book is good enough to warrant a look at the
second issue and based on that it may even warrant a look at the first
trade to get up to speed and see how it all fits together. I’ll
be looking for the next issue.

Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #8
Publisher: Marvel
Comics
Writer: Mark
Millar
Art: Frank
Cho
First-Give Frank Cho a monthly book full of super heroes. I know he’s
working on Liberty Meadows, and the upcoming Shanna She-Devil, but
we need more of him. This issue was beautiful. Second, I know I have
not been the biggest fan of this book and didn’t think I would
bring it up again after last time, but Mark Millar, you did good.
This, in my opinion, is the strongest issue of this series so far.
There are some nice character moments while Millar brings together
many of the threads he planted in the beginning. Well done. This issue
is basically a large fight between the new Venom (Angelo Fortunanto-
after buying the symbiote from Eddie Brock) and Spider-Man. This issue
gives a bit more depth to the symbiote, and his motivation and what
actually drives or controls its actions. Angelo, is the no good son
of one of New York’s crime bosses that could never seem to make
his father happy, by killing Spider-Man, he sees his opportunity to
finally please his father, but his unbridled hatred towards Spider-Man
ultimately hinders his quest. We also get to close the book on the
$5 million dollar reward that Jameson offered for Spider-Man’s
identity and it turns out that someone fronted the money, it wasn’t
Jameson himself. Who is this person? We may find out next issue, and
depending on the outcome, Millar may have redeemed himself in my eyes,
at least with this title. Everything was a slow build, broken into
relevant chapter moving towards this moment. Hopefully sticking around
will be worth it. Hopefully Frank Cho will be sticking around as well.

DEFEX #1
Publisher: Devil’s
Due
Writer: Marv
Wolfman
Art: Stefano
Caselli and Sunder Rai
I’m not sure what to think about this book. I originally picked
it up because I saw Marv Wolfman’s name on the cover. I’ve
ready many great adventures penned by him and thought I would give
it a chance. The cover itself wouldn’t have drawn me in, nothing
like a generic group pose with no real hint as to what is inside.
We start with a group (our main characters) running away from a group
(apparently not our heroes), with some fantastic powers…oh and
it takes place 30 days in the future. A few running pages and we cut
back to “today”, the catalyst event that brings this group
together; a homework assignment. Our team- Tristen Warfield, Haley
Rin, Ariel Davis, Jack Morgan and Mia Sanchez, both academically and
socially diverse, has 8 weeks to work on their project involving some
sort of nano-machines, but it appears that there is something behind
this supposed random grouping of people. Chapter two sets their research
direction and chapter three sets up how it can begin to go wrong,
and it does. Overall it’s a pretty good start and I know I will
be back next month. One of the main reasons is the art. I haven’t
seen faces this expressive since Kevin McGuire’s run on Justice
League (or any of his other work for that matter). I think that this,
the first title in Devil’s Due, Aftermath line of book, is off
to a good start. -KEVIN-

Green Arrow #44
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Judd
Winick
Pencils: Phil
Hester
Inks: Ande
Parks
Not because of hype, but more because I am aware of Winick’s
history with the Real World and his roommate Pedro and eventually
died from complications of having AIDS. I was wondering how he would
approach the subject in a comic book format without pandering and
sounding preachy. He does more in the first few pages of the book
to impart information in a non forced and frank way, that you actually
absorb the information. A lot of books claim they tackle real world
problems, but not many of them do it with the eloquence that Winick
does. There is a lot of feeling and what I would imagine personal
experience in this book. I think that this book will be one of those
important books down the road. Not that it will change the face of
story telling but one that other writers can look to as an example
of how to handle a subject like this smartly. I think it’s important
that instead of this being an “event”, it just is, and
the entire issue is a telling of how the characters deal with the
revelation, not while beating on bad guys, but as people. I will definitely
be following this title.
